Dusy-Ershim Trail History

The trail originally started out from the Badger Flats area in 1956. In the
summer of that year members of the Four Wheel Drive Club of Fresno blazed
trail to reach Ershim Lake. The following year another group of club members
pushed the trail in farther and reached Cabin Camp, near the present day
location of Knight's Camp. In 1958 progress on the trail slowed down, not
sure what the reason was, probably some type of early day environmental
review. In 1959 the club continued efforts to push the trail farther. That
same year the original trail from Badger Flat to Ershim Lake was changed to
an equestrian trail. In need of a new starting point, the club changed the
begining of the trail to the present location at White Bark Vista where they
continued on to Ershim Lake by way of Lakecamp Lake. During 1960 and 1961
the trail was pushed on to Rodeo Meadow to Hotsprings Pass and on to
Thompson Lake. A few years passed and records show little or no trail
building activities from 1962 to 1966. In 1967 a trail was made from
Courtright Reservoir to the north end of Dusy Meadow. In 1968 trail work
continued on to the north where the club tied in to the other trail that
terminated in 1961 at Thompson Lake. This trail is known as the Dusy or the
Dusy-Ershim Trail and stretches 33 miles between two wilderness areas. The
surrounding wilderness, designated by congress in 1984, is roughly 300 feet
on either side of the trail. Please stay on the approved trail and camp in
legal sites. Repect the trail and the regulations of this beautiful high
country will keep it open for all to enjoy.
